Slovenia will recognize the State of Palestine “next month”
CNN quoted the Prime Minister of Slovenia on Saturday as saying, "The situation in Gaza is catastrophic and there is a violation of all human rights laws."
He added that we will recognize the Palestinian state next month, and the division in Europe's positions does not help bring peace.
Media reports have stated that some European Union member states, including Ireland and Spain, are considering recognizing the Palestinian state on May 21.
Last week, the Irish Radio and Television Network (RTE) said that contacts had intensified between Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and Malta regarding recognition of the State of Palestine.
According to the network, a spokesman for the Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense, Michael Martin, confirmed that these talks are indeed continuing.
She indicated that European Union member states, including Ireland and Spain, will announce their recognition of the State of Palestine on May 21.
It is known that Ireland, Slovenia, Malta and Norway support the initiative to recognize the Palestinian state, which is led by Spain.
The State of Palestine is currently recognized by 8 members of the European Union, namely Bulgaria, Poland, Czechia, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, and Sweden.
On April 29, the European Union's foreign and security policy official, Josep Borrell, revealed that he expected some EU countries to officially recognize Palestine by the end of this May.
Borrell's statement, which came on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Saudi capital, expresses a conviction that has now been reflected in European positions towards recognition of the State of Palestine as a necessary step to achieve peace in the region.
Borrell said last January, in response to Benjamin Netanyahu's opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, that "despite Israel's insistence on rejection, we believe that the two-state solution will achieve peace, under pressure from the international community."
Several European countries have expressed their intention to recognize the State of Palestine as part of efforts to reach peace through a two-state solution, and French President Emmanuel Macron said last February that recognizing a Palestinian state is no longer taboo for France.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also said on March 22 that his country had agreed with the leaders of Ireland, Malta and Slovenia to take the first steps towards recognizing the State of Palestine.
