Egypt: Continued Israeli operations in Rafah “a serious threat to the stability of the region”
Egypt confirmed, on Monday, that the continuation of Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian city of Rafah, south of the Strip, constitutes a “dangerous threat to the stability of the region.”
This came according to what Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said to his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, during a phone call the latter made.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that Shoukry received a phone call from Blinken “discussing developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip.”
The two sides discussed "the humanitarian and security dimensions of the Israeli military operations in the Palestinian city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, and the related Israeli control over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing and the prevention of the entry of humanitarian aid."
Shukri stressed to his American counterpart "the serious security risks resulting from the continuation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, and in the Palestinian city of Rafah in particular, and the associated serious threat to the stability of the region."
The Egyptian and American ministers stressed "the importance of opening the land crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip, and introducing sufficient humanitarian aid to meet the urgent needs of the residents of the Gaza Strip."
In a related context, the two ministers agreed to “continue close consultation and coordination on the overall developments of the crisis in the Gaza Strip, and to support ways to contain its repercussions and prevent escalation and expansion of violence to other parts of the region,” according to the same statement.
For a week, Israel has continued to close the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings to the crossing of aid. Which made the situation more disastrous in Gaza, where about 2.3 million Palestinians live.
Earlier Monday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned, via the “X” platform, that Israel’s prevention of aid from reaching Gaza is “a matter of life and death” for the people of the Strip.
The population of the Gaza Strip, especially about two million displaced people, suffer from a severe shortage of food and vegetables. As a result of Israel's continued closure of the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings; Which pushes the sector into the clutches of famine.
