University of California students: Our administration colluded in violence against the demonstrations
On Wednesday, the Daily Bruin student newspaper at the University of California accused the university administration of complicity in acts of violence against pro-Palestine demonstrators and failing to protect them.
The newspaper said in an editorial that the university administration “stood by as it watched the violence escalate” on Tuesday.
It added: “Tear gas, pepper spray, violent beatings, and fireworks were set off at the borders of the camp, raining down on the tents and individuals inside them.
On the other hand, it revealed that the pro-Israel demonstrators demolished the barriers set up by the pro-Palestine students, and attacked them by directing a laser flash towards their sit-in camp and dropping fireworks “on the tents and the individuals inside them.”
The newspaper said that university advisor Gene Block "sent an email (Tuesday evening) to the student body at the University of California, claiming that the security presence in the area had been increased, but this was not clear in light of the escalation of violence."
On Tuesday evening, UC President Michael Drake expressed his support for Block’s decision to declare the camp “illegal,” adding that intervention is necessary when students’ safety is threatened, according to the same newspaper.
The newspaper added: “However, despite the official statements issued by the university and the University of California, we see little effort made by the university to ensure the protection of students who exercise their rights.”
It continued, "For hours, the UCLA administration stood by and watched the violence escalate. The Los Angeles Police did not arrive at the scene until shortly after 1 a.m., once Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass sent them for assistance at Block's request."
The student newspaper reported that its correspondents at the scene “were slapped and sprayed with irritating substances,” and confirmed that 5 of the protesting students were injured.
It criticized that "even though they were also students, they did not receive any protection," and asked: "Is someone going to die on our campus tonight for you to intervene, Jane Block?"
It concluded by warning the university administration by saying that if any student is harmed, “blood will be on your hands.”
On April 18, students who rejected the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip began a sit-in on the campus of Columbia University in New York, demanding that its administration stop its academic cooperation with Israeli universities and withdraw its investments in companies that support the occupation of Palestinian territories.
With the intervention of police forces and the arrest of dozens of students, the state of anger expanded and the demonstrations extended to dozens of universities in the United States, including leading universities such as Harvard, George Washington, New York, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and North Carolina.
Later, the unprecedented student movement in support of Palestine in the United States expanded to universities in countries such as France, Britain, Germany, Canada and India, all of which witnessed demonstrations in support of their counterparts in American universities and demands to stop the war on Gaza and boycott the companies that supply weapons to Israel.
