Reuters photographer Mohammed Salem won the Best International Press Photo award for 2024 on Thursday for his photo showing a Palestinian woman cradling the body of her five-year-old niece in the Gaza Strip.

The photo was taken on October 17, 2023 at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, south of Gaza, where families were searching for their relatives who were killed during the Israeli bombing of the Palestinian Strip.

The winning photo of Salem shows Enas Abu Muammar (36 years old) crying and carrying the body of baby Sally, covered with a sheet, in the hospital morgue.

The Amsterdam-based World Press Photo Foundation said while announcing its annual awards that it is important to recognize the risks facing journalists who cover conflicts.

She added that 99 journalists and media employees were killed while covering the Israeli aggression against Gaza, which broke out on October 7th.
