Britain: We will not stop supplying weapons to Israel

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said yesterday, Tuesday, that the United Kingdom government has concluded that it is permissible to continue supplying weapons to Israel, rejecting calls to suspend these exports against the backdrop of accusations of violations during the war on Gaza.

Cameron said during a visit to Washington: “With regard to Israel and international humanitarian law, and in accordance with the requirements of the United Kingdom’s robust arms export control regime, a review was conducted of the latest guidance related to the situation in Gaza and Israel’s leadership of its military campaign.”

He added, "The latest assessment leaves our position regarding export licenses unchanged."

But he pointed out in a joint press conference with his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, that “we still have major concerns regarding the arrival of humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

In turn, the United States, the largest arms supplier to Israel, rejected calls to suspend arms shipments despite growing frustration with the way Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is leading the war.

Three Britons, a Canadian-American, a Polish, and an Australian were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza, and a Palestinian was martyred, after a convoy belonging to the World Central Kitchen relief organization, whose route had been informed to the Israeli army, was targeted by three raids.

In a recent letter, more than 600 British lawyers, including former Supreme Court judges, said that Britain risks violating international law by exporting weapons to Israel.

Britain's strategic licensing criteria stipulate that weapons should not be exported when there is a "clear risk" that they could be used in violations of international humanitarian law.

London has approved arms sales worth more than 487 million pounds ($614 million) to Israel since 2015 under so-called single issue licences, while companies are exporting more weapons under open licences, according to arms control groups.

Germany, one of the largest arms suppliers to Israel, is facing a complaint before the International Court of Justice filed by Nicaragua accusing Berlin of violating the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide concluded in 1948 following the Holocaust during World War II, by sending weapons to Tel Aviv.

On Tuesday, Germany stressed before the court that Israel's security is "at the heart" of its foreign policy, firmly rejecting Nicaragua's accusations.
