The French Foreign Minister proposes imposing sanctions on Israel for bringing aid into Gaza
French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségornet said on Tuesday that pressure must be exerted, which may amount to imposing sanctions, on Israel to open the crossings to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"There must be means of pressure, and there are multiple means, including sanctions, to allow humanitarian aid to pass through checkpoints," Sigournet told RFI radio and France 24 television.
He added, "France is one of the first countries to suggest that the European Union impose sanctions on Israeli settlers who commit acts of violence in the West Bank. We will continue if necessary until we can bring in humanitarian aid."
The number of martyrs in the devastating Israeli war on the Gaza Strip rose to at least 33,207 Palestinians. Most of the Strip's 2.3 million residents are homeless and on the verge of famine.
Earlier, Tuesday, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and the Jordanian king, Abdullah II, called for an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza and the release of “all hostages,” warning Israel of “dangerous consequences.” An attack planned to be launched in Rafah.
The three leaders wrote in an opinion article published in four daily newspapers: the French “Le Monde”, the American “Washington Post”, the Jordanian “Al-Rai” and the Egyptian “Al-Ahram” on Monday, that “the war in Gaza and the catastrophic human suffering it is causing must end now.” .
“In light of the intolerable human losses, we call for the immediate and unconditional implementation of Security Council Resolution 2728,” the article said. They stressed "the urgent need to implement the Security Council's demand for the immediate release of all hostages" detained in Gaza.
