Dozens of Jewish rabbis staged a sit-in, Tuesday, January 9, 2024, inside the UN Security Council hall in New York, demanding an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza.
The organization "Rabbis for a Ceasefire" stated, in a post on the "X" platform, that a group of rabbis protested inside the UN Security Council hall in New York, carrying banners and chanting slogans demanding an "immediate and permanent" ceasefire in Gaza.
In a live broadcast by the organization on the YouTube platform, dozens of rabbis were seen chanting inside the hall of the United Nations Security Council in support of the ceasefire, raising banners that read, “Biden... stop the veto against peace” and “Biden... the world says: stop the fire.”
Rabbis support Gaza from within the Security Council
In her words to the sit-in participants, one of the rabbis said: “We are here to support the United Nations to move for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and to demand that the United States step down and let the United Nations take urgent action to protect lives.”
She added: "We are here because the United Nations is the appropriate place to take real steps to achieve a ceasefire and to hold Israel accountable for war crimes."
This protest in the Council Hall coincided with the United Nations General Assembly holding a plenary session to discuss the issue of the use of the veto by the United States in the Security Council on December 22, 2023 against an amendment proposed by Russia to a draft resolution submitted by the UAE regarding the situation in Gaza and Israel. .
