The New York Times: A “charged” phone conversation.. Biden pressures Netanyahu to move to a “delicate operation” in Gaza

During his recent conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Joe Biden urged the transition to a “more precise operation” in the Gaza Strip, focused on the leaders of the Hamas movement and the tunnels. As reported by the American newspaper "The New York Times".

During their conversation, Biden asked Netanyahu to "refrain from large-scale bombings, and move to a phase that includes raids by special forces targeting Hamas leaders and tunnels."

The American newspaper described the conversation between Biden and Netanyahu as “charged,” and this is what the American administration also conveyed to the Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, during his visit to Washington last week.

It was reported that Dermer informed American officials that Israel would soon move to a more precise stage, and said, “The first signs of change in Israeli operations will appear on the ground when the army forces end their operations in the northern Gaza Strip and begin withdrawing a large number of soldiers from there.”

According to the American newspaper, Dermer did not specify a precise timetable for the Americans, and they in turn pressured him to move to this stage as soon as possible.

In this context, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, is scheduled to visit Israel next Thursday, where he is expected to hold discussions with Israeli officials, including the Prime Minister, the Minister of Security, and the “War Cabinet,” and to receive a response regarding the transition to the aforementioned stage.

The New York Times touched on relations between the United States and Israel since the start of the war on Gaza, and described the recent talks between Biden and Netanyahu as “very charged,” and among what Biden said to Netanyahu was, “You have to do more and take things seriously.”

The newspaper summarized that the US administration’s messages revolve around four things: “Israel has the right to defend itself, the Hamas threat must be ended, humanitarian aid must be increased, and civilian casualties in Gaza must be reduced.”

She pointed out, "There are hints that Netanyahu will eventually agree to accept a role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza after reform measures. He realizes that there must be a Palestinian government if he wants the Arab Gulf states to finance the reconstruction of the Strip."
