Flooding the tunnels threatens Gaza with a disaster
Environmental experts have warned of reports that Israel is seeking to flood Gaza's tunnels, noting that this step, if it occurs, will cause a disaster with long-term effects on groundwater and perhaps the soil in the Strip, as well as the potential impact on building foundations, while it is not yet clear if the Israeli army had not actually begun pumping seawater into the Hamas tunnel system in the Gaza Strip.
Israel attacks Hamas' tunnels in the north and south of the Gaza Strip, as they are the most powerful weapon that enables the movement's leaders to survive and gives its fighters the advantage in attacking. It is also considered a secret prison for detainees that Israel is searching for. While the Israeli army refused to comment on the matter, statements by Defense Minister Yoav Galant indicate that the dumping, if it actually takes place, is taking place in specific areas where Israel knows there are no detainees.
The situation in Gaza and other regional issues were the focus of a meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan yesterday (Wednesday), according to what two American officials announced to Reuters. One of them stated that the research focused on “increasing diplomatic efforts to maintain stability throughout the region and prevent the expansion of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu anticipated Sullivan's arrival in Tel Aviv today (Thursday), in an attempt to heal the rift with Washington, after the differences between them became public. Sullivan is expected to exert pressure to reduce the intensity of fighting and put forward a deadline for war.
Meanwhile, Israel announced that it had suffered its largest losses in more than a month after its forces were ambushed in Gaza City, causing shock among its citizens. The Israeli army admitted that it lost 10 soldiers, including an officer with the rank of colonel, and senior commanders in battalions, including the Golani Brigade. Following this announcement, the families of the Israeli prisoners issued a distress call and demanded a complete cessation of the war and negotiations to release their sons.
At a time when Israel faces increasing diplomatic isolation with the rising number of civilian deaths and the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, and a day after the United Nations called for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, and US President Joe Biden’s statement that the “indiscriminate” bombing of civilians undermines international support for Israel. ; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu challenged the world with a statement during a visit to an armored forces camp in the southern region, saying: “International pressure will not stop us.”
