Freed Detainee Jaabis: We were subjected to abuse and beatings in Israeli prisons

Freed Palestinian prisoner Israa Jaabis said in a press interview upon her arrival to her home in Jerusalem following her release that she and other female prisoners were subjected to abuse and beatings in the occupation prisons.

She added that "young Palestinian girls were subjected to unspeakable practices in the occupation prisons," calling for action to liberate all Palestinian prisoners.

Israa was released late last night, Saturday, among 39 captured Palestinian women and children, as part of the second batch of the prisoner exchange deal between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which is accompanied by a truce in the Gaza Strip for a period of 4 days, subject to extension.

Regarding her feelings after her release, Israa told Al Jazeera correspondent Najwan Samri, “We are ashamed to be happy when all of Palestine is wounded.”

As for Israa’s father, he said, “My daughter is not more important than the people of Gaza.”

Israa is one of the 10 oldest female prisoners in the occupation prisons. She served 8 years of her 11-year sentence on charges of attempting to kill an Israeli soldier.

On October 11, 2015, while she was returning from the city of Jericho to Jerusalem, near Al-Za’im checkpoint, her car broke down, so the occupation forces opened fire on the car, which led to the explosion of a gas cylinder it was in and the outbreak of a large fire, according to what her family reported regarding the details of the incident.

As a result, Israa suffered burns ranging from first to third degree, affecting 50% to 60% of her body. She lost all the fingers on her hands, and her face was disfigured.

The occupation authorities prevented her from receiving the treatment she needed, and deliberately neglected her despite her need for 8 surgical operations.
