The United Nations warns of an increase in cases of drought and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned today (Sunday) of an increase in cases of drought and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to a war by Israel since the seventh of last October.
The OCHA office said in a statement, a copy of which was received by Xinhua News Agency, that only 10 percent of the necessary food supplies have entered Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli war, which was accompanied by the imposition of a comprehensive closure on the Strip.
According to the statement, the World Food Program reported an increase in cases of drought and malnutrition, and warned of the risk of famine due to the collapse of the food supply chain and insufficient aid delivery.
He pointed out that in Gaza City and its north, no bakeries have been operated since the seventh of this month, due to the lack of fuel, water, and wheat flour, in addition to the structural damage resulting from Israel’s raids.
The statement explained that wheat flour was no longer available in the markets, and members of the food security sector were unable to provide assistance after access to Gaza City and its north was largely cut off.
The statement monitored evidence of negative coping mechanisms, including skipping or reducing meals and using unsafe and unhealthy methods of starting fires.
With the exception of the three fuel trucks, no humanitarian supplies entered Gaza via Egypt yesterday, Saturday. Since last October 21, 1,139 trucks loaded with humanitarian supplies have entered Gaza via Egypt (excluding fuel).
