World Food: Food systems in Gaza are collapsing and aid is only sufficient for 10% of needs
The World Food Program in Palestine said that all residents of Gaza are in need of humanitarian assistance, warning of the risk of diseases emerging and spreading in the Strip in light of people’s inability to obtain nutritious food, clean water and sanitation facilities.
World Food Program spokeswoman in Palestine, Alia Zaki, said on Wednesday that people in Gaza will be more vulnerable to the spread of diseases on a wider scale, given that they do not eat enough food and nutrition.
She added: "Their immune system will be weakened because they do not eat enough food to help them overcome all the challenges they face now, and people do not have the basic necessities that protect them or protect them from the risk of diseases that can spread, especially with the approaching winter and the heavy rains that we are witnessing now." ".
The World Food Program spokeswoman warned that Gaza's diets are collapsing, stores are running out of food, and what little remains is being sold at increasingly high prices, while bakeries have closed their doors.
She pointed out that the program is currently focusing on providing food as rich in nutrients as possible.
She continued: "We have begun distributing high-nutrient density items fortified with vitamins and minerals to ensure that people get the largest possible amount of calories they need, and soon, we will also distribute customized nutrition for pregnant women and children to ensure that they receive complementary support for their nutrition."
Zaki added that the UN program relies on canned food, dates and bread to help the rest of the population, which is increasingly at risk of malnutrition.
She stated that the program has a team of nutrition experts who are trying to design a food basket that meets the greatest possible nutritional needs of people in Gaza who cannot cook due to the lack of food and fuel, and the availability of clean water also poses a very big challenge.
Zaki stressed the need to provide fuel, noting that the lack of fuel restricts the program’s ability to help those in need, “because without fuel, trucks cannot move, mills and bakeries cannot work, and life will stop.”
She stressed the need to expand access to Gaza, saying: “We need to make sure that we are able to deliver supplies in any way possible. If one border crossing is no longer enough, we need to explore other options as well. We need safe access into Gaza until “Once in transit, this food can be distributed and actually reach people wherever they are throughout Gaza.”
Zaki said that the food supplies entering through the Rafah crossing currently constitute only 10% of the food needs of the entire population of Gaza - 2.2 million people - and all of them need humanitarian assistance.
It is noteworthy that since last October 21, the World Food Program has entered more than 70 trucks loaded with food aid - that is, more than a thousand metric tons of food that has reached more than half a million people.
The WFP spokeswoman said that the total number of trucks that entered the Gaza Strip is not enough and represents only a first step, adding, “People in Gaza need our help to make sure they have something to eat at the end of the day, and now more than ever, we need to make sure "There is a continuous and widespread flow of humanitarian aid."
